Building the foundation wall

Don began by having the backhoe dig a trench. Then he had to build forms for the footings. In places, the trench wasn't straight so he had to dig on the sides. Here he is laying rebar in the trench.  Here Don is building a form for the new foundation wall.  This picture shows vertical supports for the form.  It was necessary to build three separate forms for the wall.  Here you can see the vertical and horizontal rebar very well.  All the forms are complete.  Supports had to be placed so the pouring of the cement would not cause the forms to bow.  Looking down on the rebar in the form.  It's hard to tell from this picture but Don is holding a tie down which will be placed in the cement.  Tie downs attach the house to the foundation and prevent it from blowing away in a strong wind.  The cement pouring beings.  Rocky in the green shirt is tapping the form to prevent air bubb...

Tuesday, August 1, 2017 Don continued his work on the root cellar wall. Wednesday, August 2, 2017 Don finished the final wall of the root cellar—not before conking himself on the head with the frame.   Done!  Thursday, August 3, 2017 Don started putting floor joists over the basement.  Friday, August 4, 2017 Don added wooden blocks to stabilize the floor joists. He is standing triumphantly on the floor of the house.  Saturday, August 5, 2017 We made a Home Depot run.  Purchased miscellany and twelve more floor joists and 12 pieces of plywood. The surest way to get people to offer to help at Home Depot is for Barbara to do anything.  It was a heavy load for our car to pull but it didn't seem to struggle.  Of course, Don took care.   There is a grade we come up on the way to Eureka that our bishop calls a car killer so we have to be especially careful there.
