Don continued his work on the root cellar wall.
Wednesday, August 2, 2017
Don finished the final wall of the root cellar—not before conking himself on the head with the frame.

Done!

Don started putting floor joists over the basement.

 Friday, August 4, 2017
Don added wooden blocks to stabilize the floor joists.
He is standing triumphantly on the floor of the house.
 Saturday, August 5, 2017
We made a Home Depot run.  Purchased miscellany and twelve more floor joists and 12 pieces of plywood. The surest way to get people to offer to help at Home Depot is for Barbara to do anything.

It was a heavy load for our car to pull but it didn't seem to struggle.  Of course, Don took care.   There is a grade we come up on the way to Eureka that our bishop calls a car killer so we have to be especially careful there.

Don was working on leveling his rim joists and blocking the other half that has been installed.  Then he said we needed to go get water.   This is the first time we've gone to get water ourselves.  Patrick's truck is in the shop.

Don and a brother from church worked on flooring.  There was also an elderly couple who came and offered help.  We also had two eleven year old granddaughters wanting to help.  Don as actually frustrated with all of the help because he couldn't do the task he had assigned for himself with the help that showed up.
Wednesday, August 9, 2017
Don built a beam by attaching two joists and putting some plywood in the middle.  He glued it and bolted it.
 Thursday, August 10, 2017
With the help of a granddaughter, Don rolled the heavy beam into place
Friday, August 10, 2017
Don built the other beam and moved it into place.  He put the rim joist across the end of the basement.

Don made the hole for a geo-thermal cooling system.under the foundation on the north side for natural cooling of the cabin in the summer.  He continued working on the floor joists and flooring.  In the afternoon, he made a Home Depot run.

Tuesday, August 15, 2017
Don was pulled out of bed by two neighbors coming to help him off load his trailer from his home depot run.  He spent the day building the support for the porch.

Wednesday, August 16, 2017
Don started his day by undoing what he had done yesterday. He was hurrying to beat the rain and put a floor joist hanger in the wrong place. He worked on putting in flooring and floor joists the rest of the day.

Friday, August 18, 2017
Don put the joists in the 3rd quadrant. In the evening, we ran to home depot to get what he needs to begin the fourth quadrant.

It was Tintic Days out here (yesterday and today).  That is a local celebration with a scout breakfast, a parade, raffle drawing and auction, activities and booths at the park and supposedly a concert and ice social in the evening but it got rained out.  This cut the work day short but Don did get some blocking done on the joists installed.

A man dugg the hole for the sewage system. It was determined to go into the house through the same hole Don had dug for the cold air intake system. I thought, there goes my garage but maybe if they put a man hole over where the pipes are, it would still be possible. In the afternoon, a truck with a crane delivered a 1000 gallon concrete cube which will be the sewage tank. It was quite interesting to watch this be removed from the truck and placed in the hole. I see why we are paying  $3000 for the sewage system. A second man also came out and dug a trench nearly to the street on the north side. Don said he wants the cold air intake system to go a long ways under the ground. This is called geo-thermal cooling. A trench was also dug to where the water tank will be. This tore up the driveway. We can’t dig the hole for the water tank yet because we don’t know how big it will be. I pointed out to Don that I couldn’t get to the outhouse from either direction. He threw a couple of boards over the sewage system trench and made a bridge. Don added more blocking to the third quadrant and put on the rim joist on the east end.  We took a break to watch the eclipse.

Jeff came back and worked on the leach field. The trench was softer than he anticipated in places and it widened as he put the gravel in, requiring more gravel so he will have to come back and finish another day. Don cut lumber for the joists the root cellar allowing for a hole. In the afternoon, he and a brother from our ward went to Home Depot to get more joists and subfloor.

Today was a short work day because of Barbara's doctor’s appointment. Don put up a rim joint for the fourth quadrant.  Don and Pat went to get water for the sewage system. We have to fill it up to beyond where the two parts are joined to see if there is any leak. We only had time for one trip and it is not enough water to reach the point where it is joined.

Thursday, August 24, 2017
Don put in pipes for the water system and partially covered them. He also made a cross beam to go over the root cellar. The inspector came for the sewage system. He said it is good but we need to finish filling up the septic tank to verify it is not leaking. Don and Pat went and got additional water in the afternoon.

Friday, August 25, 2017
Don called to see if the inspector needed to see the pipes for the water. He does not. Don covered the water pipes with dirt. He worked on the joists over the root cellar. He and Pat put the foundation for the stairs in the root cellar and then Don decided it takes up too much room so he is going to tear it apart.

Don and Pat worked on the joists on the last quadrant. Don was two joists short so he and Pat made a trip to home depot to get them plus other things Don needs. Harry came over and offered to help Don get the sub-floor on on Tuesday morning so it is a deadline for Don to get all of his blocking and his last joists in by then.

That was a lot of floor joists this week.  We have an offer from a neighbor to come and help lay the remaining subfloor Tuesday morning so Don needs to finish his blocking of the fourth quadrant on Monday.  That means we will be ready to start framing on Wednesday.  Yipee!

Sunday, August 27, 2017
Usually Don doesn’t do any work on Sunday but he began the day by off-loading the trailer. He couldn’t just unhitch it because it would tip over. Jeff came and got his back hoe.

Monday, August 28, 2017
Don spent some time today figuring out how to get the pipes where they would need to go once the floor is on. He then put in the rest of the joists and blocking. He was short one joist. He had planned to go get it but was too tired when it came down to it.  He jammed with his helpers over lunch.

Tuesday, August 29, 2017
Don set his alarm and we got up at six. Harry was coming at seven to help with the flooring. I fixed us a green-drink and granola bar breakfast. Harry came and also Glen so we now have our driveway back with some gravel on it. Jeff brought the gravel on Sunday. It was a free delivery. Harry and Don worked all morning. Pat had gone to Home Depot to get that last floor joist. He also got some pipes for the kitchen plumbing.

Wednesday, August 30, 2017
Don worked on finishing the subfloor. Dan came and helped him for a while. Jeff came out and finished his work, putting down straw in the leach fields and covering everything up.

Thursday, August 31, 2017
Don began the day by looking up the weather. Supposedly we had a 7% chance of precipitation. It was raining, but not a lot. Don searched out some wood sources and decided he would go into Provo and get some decking.  While in Provo, Don picked up his pipes for the geothermal cooling system.  Con helped off-load them.

    1. Well... technically, we ALMOST have a subfloor. But it's neat being able to WALK AROUND IN OUR HOUSE! (Even though we're not inside when we do it.)
