Journal of Progress--October 15-21

Our carpenters worked hard all day long. It is such a blessing for us to have them and so random to have found them. They work well together, are willing to accept token wages, and they do such a good job. They finished the west side of the house and moved the scaffolding to the east side and continued working. We are fortunate for the man carpenter's height. He can reach things no one else can.

They put the scaffolding back together and kept working.

In the meantime, Don was making a channel for wire upstairs.

We went up to a friend's cabin and got some poles Don is going to use to build his wood shed.

Don is using a lever to move the heavy metal roofing enough that the scaffolding will fit around it when the time comes.

The carpenters came in the early afternoon and worked until they had the east side of the house covered with wrap and the gable done.

Lifting a heavy board up for the gable.

Moving the scaffolding to the other side.

 That was easy.

Barbara felt what she thought was an earthquake. She looked it up and there had been a 2.9 with the epicenter about 16 miles west of Santaquin. In other words, it was fairly close.

Don and the lady carpenter worked on the stairs

The carpenters finished putting the felt on the south side of the roof.

It's kind of scary seeing them stand on these little 2" boards.

The inspector came. He said that what Don has ordered for the stove pipe will not work so, money spent, and we have to buy again—the expensive stuff. Don was trying to avoid that. The inspector  wouldn’t look at the electrical on the main floor until we can do the 4-way. Basically, this means we will not be able to live in the house as we finish it because it will have no heat. That means we have to find another place to live until we can move into the house.

This is Don's design for the stove pipe.

Another interesting sunset.

The carpenters got the house completely felted.

Covering the very last part of the roof with roofing felt! Too steep for Don.

Our male carpenter went deer hunting with his son.  Don and the female carpenter finished building the stairs.

 Making sure it is level.
Don walks in to get the nail gun.

 Lowering down the middle stringer.

Checking for level. All 14 steps were perfect except for the top step, which had to be shimmed 1/4".

 Whoops!
 Raising the head jamb.
Barbara tries out her new stairs.

We have made arrangements to rent a room with a kitchenette at the Tintic Goldminer's Inn in Eureka until we can get into the house.  Some employment we were hoping for is looking dubious so Barbara got a job selling insurance at a call center.  She will be leaving be before work begins on the house in the morning and returning after the day's work is completed, so she will not be taking many pictures.  Don cannot take pictures of himself working but will try to get a few of work completed.  That all goes to say that there may not be many pictures in future weekly blog updates. We'll see how it goes.
