The Gold Street Cabin In Mammoth, Utah

Mammoth was a booming mining town of 3000 at the turn of the century. There is almost no mining activity there now. About 50 people now live in a few, scatted homes, many of which are former miner's cabins. Many of the rest were designed to be collapsed and moved when the mining slowed. We have a partial foundation, and will build from there.

Journal of progress--July 30-August 5 2018

Monday, July 30, 2018 Viisited today by a daughter and all her kids, plus the two granddaughters who came out last week. and our employee showed up on time, so I had LOTS of help. With lots of instruction, thekids were able to sort and de-nail most of the junk pile. The mom mostly supervised kids. I know she wanted to do some actual construction, and she did do a little bit, but her biggest contribution was keeping kids out of my hair, so I could work. Only one injury--one grandson stepped on a nail. Not a bad one. Our employee and I managed to get all the remaining corners braced with plywood, in the process using up all the full sheets of plywood I have. But there’s plenty of OSB left for the rest of the walls. We’ll probably finish this week, and can start installing windows, or roofing, or doing exterior closing-in finish work, such as soffits, etc. Don did not journal every day this week so basically the work continued on sheathing the hou...

Monday June 18-Thursday June 21, 2018 We enjoyed a reunion with our children and grandchildren in southern Utah Fiday, June 22, 2018 We returned to Mammoth, was visited by our daughter and family from Texas. After they left, it was too hot to work, but did get some work done in the evening. Got the concrete blocks installed, and temporarily nailed the stairs in place. Tomorrow will permanently screw the stairs and the landing to the house and install the decking. Shouldn’t take long. I expect delivery of the i-joists on Monday. It’s gonna be interesting getting 32-foot joists up on top of eight-foot walls! Saturday, June 23, 2018 Barbara took an early morning walk above Mammoth. Monday, October 15, 2018 Our carpenters worked hard all day long. It is such a blessing for us to have them and so random to have found them. They work well together, are willing to accept token wages, and they do such a good job. They finished the west side of the house and moved the scaffolding to the east side and continued working. We are fortunate for the man carpenter's height. He can reach things no one else can. They put the scaffolding back together and kept working. In the meantime, Don was making a channel for wire upstairs. Tuesday, October16, 2018 We went up to a friend's cabin and got some poles Don is going to use to build his wood shed. Don is using a lever to move the heavy metal roofing enough that the scaffolding will fit around it when the time comes.
