Journal of Progress--June
Thursday, June 1
Don had been trying to cut wood with Pat's son's generator. It is not able to do it. Then our land-lady came by and brought a generator. It wasn't powerful enough either. The solar panels we have are whimpy and cannot run anything as powerful as a saw. Margaret Gillen, our land-lady, said they had a more powerful generator in their basemen we could use but Don would have to go get it.

Barbara hung up my bird
houses and bird feeder things. Don went to Provo—he says that is
the nearest Home Depot, to get rebar. Barbara expected Don would take a while. It was getting
later and later in the afternoon. Don still had not returned. Barbara was
getting worried because it was much longer than she expected. Itt was near four before he did come back.Barbara had practically
planned his funeral and figured out her widowhood by then.
Friday, June 2
Don worked at getting ready to put to rebar in the foundation. Barbara got phone service set up.
Saturday, June 3, 2017
We opened up our tent trailer and got out the useful things there. In the afternoon, a friend from Provo came out and with her metal detector and we went treasure hunting where the Railway Station was. This is just below where we are building.

Day of rest
Monday, June 5, 2017
Don continued to work on the foundation in the morning.
In the afternoon, we went to Provo. Don to a Home Depot and Barbara to a laundromat and grocery shopping. Our Provo daughter invited us to share dinner with their family.

A hillbilly's recliner.Don had been trying to cut wood with Pat's son's generator.
Don off-loaded the
plywood using the dolly to move it. The phone man came by and installed our temporary phone line. It cost us $26 to set it up. Compare that with the $10,000 the power company wants. That is such a rip off. Our long distance on the phone is not working. About dusk to men showed up and
said they were the building inspectors. Don was showing them this
and that and explaining things and asking questions when suddenly
they laughed. They are from the high priest’s quorum.
Wednesday, June 8, 2017
Don came in very
discouraged. He cannot get Gillen’s generator to start. He and
Pat had driven to their house to get it. It is a big heavy thing,
she said they just bought it last year and only used it once. He is
getting discouraged that it seems nothing goes the way he wants it
to. He talked of giving up. It may come to that where we have to
give up. Barbara can’t call it. Done’s going to have to. Perhaps,
though, with the help of others, we’ll be able to see it through.
He hand sawed boards and made the turn-table for the solar panels so
he felt he had accomplished something by the end of the day. He was
able to reach the operator on the phone but they wanted to charge $11
to connect us to the phone company to tell them our phone was not
operating correctly. A supervisor was willing to connect us directly
but he just got a message machine. Then he tried to go online to get
through. There there were 1-800 numbers. He was able to get through
on them. He got our long-distance turned on and set up for internet
next Tuesday.

Phone line hook-up
Don got the rebar
put in for the foundation and worked some on the root cellar. It was
hard to do a lot of work in the wind. It was really windy and he had to finally give up outside work. Both bird houses were damaged by the wind and the one that attaches to the window broke apart.

Went to Salt Lake. Checked out railroad cars as possible storage unit. Was quoted $3000 to have them delivered. We'll have to think outside the box as that price is more than we would pay for our current storage unit in Salt Lake from now until the house is built. Bought a generator and energy power station called a Yeti at Costco.
Saturday, June 10, 2017
Don continued working on his footings. He installed rebar and started to build the frame.
We had a surprise visit from a son-in-law and grand-daughter. They were returning from the sand dunes south of us and saw the sign for Mammoth and decided to buzz up and see us. You see the new generator in the foreground.
We had the very welcome visit from Jim who is a concrete worker. The west side of our foundation is two inches higher than the rest of it. Using a concrete cutter, Jim cut it down to size.
Barbara cut Don's hair really short. It was looking so wild from the wind blowing it all of the time.

Church. Day of Rest.
Monday, June 12, 2107
Don started working on root cellar--leveling floor and evening out sides. Wind was blowing hard, had some rain and hail.
Tuesday, June 13, 2017
Work continued to progress on the root cellar. Don dug out a rock that he said was as big as a basketball.
Don's making a path down to the west end of the property were our tent trailer is parked.
Wednesday, June 14, 2017
Don and Pat went to Stockton for more cheap lumber. Don bought the trailer from Pat's son so we didn't have to keep going to Salt Lake to borrow our daughter's trailer.
Thursday, July 15, 2017
Don continued working on the root cellar.
Friday, June 16, 2017
Don miscalculated when he made the root cellar and he can't stand up in it. He cut it apart with his saws and raised the top part. He ran out of time to finish it as we had an appointment in Salt Lake.
Saturday, June 17, 2017
We stayed overnight in South Jordan. We ran errands, went to the temple and attended a wedding reception in the evening, went to DI and returned to Mammoth.
Sunday, June 18, 2017
We went to Provo to celebrate a granddaughter's birthday.
Monday, June 19, 2017
Don finished his work on the reconstructing the outhouse.
Tuesday, June 20, 2017
Don talked to the building inspector about the old foundation and what is necessary for footings for the new foundation. We arranged to rent a cabin from Margaret for our stuff in a storage unit in Salt Lake.
Wednesday, June 21, 2017
Don worked on supports for the footings for the new foundation.
Thursday, June 22, 2017
Don built a bridge to be able to get into the cabin we will be using as a storage space.
Door of storage cabinet before bridge was built.
Friday, June 23, 2017
Don marked where the tie down holes will have to be. It completely ruined the drill bit he had.
Saturday, June 24, 2017
We went to Provo to get a cement drill bit and learned the store had closed at 12 noon. Spent some time with family and doing laundry.

Drove to Salt Lake with out trailer. Bought a drill bit that is supposed to do cement. Had lunch with some friends, went to DI, checked out a stove one daughter wants to get rid of and went to the storage unit and loaded up a U-Haul truck and our trailer with the help of two daughters, a granddaughter, and a son. Returned to Mammoth.
Tuesday, June 27, 2017
Off-loaded the trailer and U-Haul into the storage cabin with the help of three men from the ward and some youth. One of the men helped Don off-load the plywood he had purchased yesterday at our building site. Returned the U-Haul to Payson.
Wednesday, June 28, 2017
Don tried to drill the holes with the cement drill bit. No success. He went to ask other Mammoth residents their suggestions.
Jim showed up in the afternoon. He said he could drill the holes if he went to Orem and got the right tool. Late in the afternoon, he came back and quickly and efficiently drilled the holes.
Thursday, July 29, 2017
We went to Clearfield to celebrate a granddaughter's birthday. While there, we showered and did our laundry. We stopped at the ReStore in Salt Lake. We had never been there before. It is like a builder's DI. After checking it out, we got gas for the generator and propane for the trailer.
Friday, July 30, 2017
Don again resumed work on the footing frames.

Glad that you got your phone set up. It is nice to be able to call you!
ReplyDeleteDid he dig all that by hand?
ReplyDeleteNo. We had a backhoe come in and dig it. He had to even out the sides and the ground is extremely hard. Not even the backhoe can go down very far in certain places.
