Journal of Progress--First Week of September

We had family and friends visit. Don pretty much spent his time getting ready for our guests. He cleaned up things which might be dangerous for children, he covered the root cellar so no child fell in, and he made a path to the outhouse.
Pat let the grandchildren play with his go-cart.

Don learned when they put the last floor boards on that the house is not square. Using a nail in each corner, string, and a measuring tape, he learned that it is four inches off in one corner. That is actually huge in house construction, and he will have to make some adjustments. He worked on laying the boards for the porch.

Barbara wasn't feeling well and stayed home from church.  Wasps were swarming the humming bird feeder. Barbara even saw the queen. She was bigger than the others and had much bigger wings. When she came, the others scattered and then they stayed pretty much on the bottom while she was on the top. Eventually, Don lifted the feeder off the branch with a long pole and dumped it in some soapy water. They still swarmed the branch where it had been. Eventually, Don sprayed the branch with wasp spray and then they went away. Barbara made a wasp trap with the humming bird solution and hung it on the fence.

Don said we could call this the Adventures of Don Sawyer. Don and Gordon got the 2 x 4’s out of the basement and set up a measurement thing to cut them and cut them to length. After Gordon left, I saw Don pulling the the ones they had cut and recutting them. He said they got them too long.   We had another visit from family and Daniel, Guido, and Christopher helped recut the boards.

Don worked on the deck today.

Don finished the deck and worked a bit on his geo-thermal cooling.

Thursday, September 7, 2017
Don worked on bedding his geo-thermal pipes.  We had a visit to the city where we visited two Restores and bought a window and some bathroom fixtures.

Don worked on laying out the stairs into the root cellar and then he finished his pipes for his cold air vent. This is the summer view when they will take in air to be cooled below ground.  In the winter, they will be capped.
Dan brought over a little helping hand for Don.  It is a very little hand.  They have the same Cub Scout sense of humor.

Don built stairs to the basement today. He started right off and he worked all day until 7 pm. He was discouraged. The stringers (the supports that hold up the stairs) were cracking when he put the stairs on. He also hit his thumb hard so he was hurting. Harry came over and told him how to deal with the cracking in the stringers so he felt better after that. It was cold today, cloudy much of it. The wind blew and it rained some. Don worked right through the rain. He said he and Dan hid out in the root cellar for about an hour and talked during the worst of it.

  1. Lots of progress since I was there. I hope that Don's finger is okay.
