Don's computer is on the glitch so he just added a few notes to Barbara's to explain the pictures.

Man carpenter didn’t come.  Don and lady carpenter spent most of the day hammering these metal braces on the rafters.

They got the sheathing on the south side of the roof.

The balcony doors have arrived! We'll install them after we build the balcony.
The doors and frame are made of steel and weigh 250 lbs.

Wish we had a fork lift to lift sheets of 3/8" OSB to the attic!

Fighting with the apricot tree to install the first sheet.

Man carpenter and lady carpenter finished sheathing the rafters and began building a truss. Don spent much of his day cutting gusset plates for the joints in the trusses. .We went to Salt Lake and picked up the wood stove our daughter is giving us as well as a freezer from R C Wiley.

Meanwhile...

Gottta line up the full sheet exactly with the table saw fence...

...and keep it lined up while ripping a full, 4x8 foot sheet of plywood...

...and pull it through the saw while supporting the uncut side. Note the improvised table saw table extension.
That's one cut made. Now only six more to go for this sheet.
Now I can cross cut to make squares. Five hundred more to go.

Tacking up the "blueprints" Don designed. Glad we have professional carpenters to help build them!

.Lady carpenter has her pattern made for the trusses. Don finished sawing his little squares. Man carpenter didn’t come until late in the afternoon. He helped Don off-load the freezer and the stove. The stove does fit. It loads on the wall side, not the open side. We went to Provo and picked up the repaired broken window and the two windows from Home Depot

That's about half of the gusset plates we'll need. Don is covered in saw dust.

Laying out the truss pattern designed by Don.

The truss pattern. We're building an assembly jig on the attic floor.
The dormer window seat, which we're currently using for overnight tool storage.

Off comes the freezer!
And the wood stove.
The stove is too heavy for us to just lift down, so we slid it down an improvised ramp.

Home at last! Ain't I a pretty sight?

Man carpenter came early and worked on cutting truss boards. Don worked on making jigs for the truss boards. lady carpenter showed up in the afternoon and cut all the rest of the wood we had available for trusses. We went to Tooele for a Home Depot run, more paint from NAPA auto parts store, laundry, and groceries. We picked up more wood from our supplier in Stockton.

Barbara called a plumber. He will come out with an estimate toward the end of next week and be able to do the work the week after that.  Don is dealing with the wood from Stockton in these next few pictures.

We had four cords of wood delivered..

Don spent the rest of the day working on cutting the pieces for the wall around the stair hole upstairs

Last week, the male carpenter's kids helped gather, sort, and bag scraps of wood lying around the house. We got the bags from a friend in Eureka who heats with wood pellets. They are the toughest plastic bags we've ever seen! This is about half the wood scraps they gathered.

They also gathered and bagged trash wood we can neither use nor burn, for a trip to the dump. There was enough to fill our truck bed level with the sides!

Comments

  1. Looks like exterior is almost finished. When I was there, saw lots of little pieces of wood outside dining room window on the South. Are those bagged for stove, or trash? both? Hope you get ALL of exterior finished soon! Rain coming next week!

When do you hook up wood stove? ( Looks great, by the way. ) In a couple more weeks it will be getting colder in your cabin.
